Video has become a mainstay of entertainment and communication in mainstream and online media, such as YouTube, Vine, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. As such, the quality of the video filming has become an important point of consideration for users. An aesthetically superior video delivers a more polished and professional impression, as evidenced by the almost ubiquitous use of HD quality videos for movie trailers on YouTube. Thus, the option for enhanced quality of videography would be appreciated by all users and even vital to some whose livelihoods are affected by the standard of their social media uploads.
Apart from the resolution of the video, the skillfulness of the videographer in capturing the video can also impact quality. Videos taken with shaky hands or in situations requiring active movement may result in poor quality film which is difficult to view. As such, our team had decided to develop a device (‘Gimbal’) which maintains the orientation of a smartphone regardless of the motion of the user. Such a device would attenuate the vibrations or jerking associated with handheld video recording, especially during physically dynamic activities. As a result, the user would be able to produce better videos.
